Liberia: Elections 2011 Daily News Review - 22nd August

Almost all the papers this morning, carries stories about tomorrow's referendum and a plea for a violent free polls. We start the review with the headline Don't Boycott, Reject Referendum, a candid call by The Independent. The National Elections Commission has trained and deployed electoral; workers along with logistical materials to some 4,457 polling centers around the country fr0 the conduct of the Tuesday August 23, National Referendum aimed at amending certain portions of the Liberian constitution.In August 2010, the National Legislature passed a joint resolution proposing a Constitutional Referendum to amend certain provisions of the Liberian Constitution.These four propositions currently prepared by the NEC are to be answered by YES or NO vote from the 1.7m voters. The Commission has also maintained that two-thirds of the total voters cast would legitimize the referendum.The national Referendum which has suffered many attacks from the opposition is marred with contentions and rejections with all sides of the divide citing constitutional rights whether to participate in the polls or boycott the process. The process is expected to out to rest on tomorrow following various debates in amending the laws of the country.
